1. Transitional Weekend Retreats

Alexanders offers its facilities and services to wounded service members from local military hospitals and to their families for transitional weekend experiences.

The facilities and services at Alexanders Inn are offered to wounded service members from local military hospitals and their families for transitional weekend experiences. These weekends offer families a relaxed, pampered, welcoming environment with all the amenities including childcare, meals, movies excursions, fishing, recreational activities, pool matches or private family time. The weekends are designed to give families time to be together in an environment free of the hospital routines and without worries.

2. Transitional weeklong Vacations in Jupiter, Florida

In 2009 Alexanders expanded the concept of offering transitional experiences to offering weeklong Florida vacation experiences in private oceanfront or riverfront homes for service members and their families. A Wounded Warriors Second Chance, a 501© (3) organization was created to provide families a financially worry-free, relaxed, pampered, welcoming environment with all the recreational amenities Florida has to offer.  Community volunteers stand ready to offer assistance and help as needed to welcome the families.  Re-connecting with and providing private family time is the centerpiece of this transitional experience.

3. Project Big Woods is a partnership between Alexanders owners and OSC

Alexander's owners and the charitable organization Operation Second Chance (OSC) partnered to establish free lodging opportunities to service members and their families who are in urgent need of housing and a nurturing and healing environment. Alexander’s owners have provided a house the OSC operates, manages, and oversees the selection and care of the service members. The house is offered free of charge to individuals or families who are in need.  Caseworkers are aware of Project big Woods and can make referrals when rooms are filled at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and surrounding hotels.

Our initiatives salute the young men and women who have given so much in the line of duty so we can be a free nation with liberty for all.

About Operation Second Chance

Since 2004 Cindy McGrew, founder and president of OSC, a 501(c)(3) organization, and her outstanding volunteers have directly interacted with the service members in the various military hospitals to assist their needs. They personally assist wounded service members in a variety of capacities from making mortgage, utility or car payments to paying for transportation for families to visit their loved one, to making modifications to homes, arranging for portable cribs to giving grocery cards. OSC conducts numerous fundraisers to support their efforts (see: fundraiser and a video of Ride Allegheny).

Many wounded service members stay in the same hospital room for six months or more. As you can imagine, it gets pretty tedious. To keep their spirits lifted, OSC tries to find new forms of entertainment. OSC purchased Wii consoles and games that not only provide entertainment but also a different form of physical therapy. OSC regularly takes wounded service members to professional and college sporting events with donated tickets in their specially equipped van. For many, the outing with OSC is their first experience at a professional game. If you are interested, contact OSC for more information about volunteering.
